Game Recap

Sidney Lanier head coach Brian Williams said everything his team does from now on will be a piece of history. His boys got to celebrate their first area basketball title under Williams on Saturday.

DaCoreyon Johnson scored 13 points to lead the Poets to a 69-60 win over Brewbaker Tech in the Class 5A, Area 4 title game at Brew Tech.

The Poets (19-8) avoided a season sweep by the Rams, who had defeated Lanier twice each by three points during the regular season.

Williams said that his team showed the promise indicative of its performances during the first two meetings with Brew Tech this season.

This program is moving in the right direction, Williams said. We are just trying to change the culture at Lanier. This is our first step in doing just that. We knew we could come in and win this tournament. It’s so important for the school and this team.

Jay Brown and James Foster each added 12 points for Lanier, which will host Jackson in a subregional Tuesday. The Poets led most of the way behind clutch shooting and stiff defense.

The Rams (24-5) got 27 points from Alabama State signee Austin Rogers and 11 points from Emmanuel Barnes. Brew Tech will visit Vigor in a subregional.

Williams said he wants his players to enjoy everything that’s happening, but focus on winning the next game.

We are going to have the same approach as we have all season, Williams said. We want to be 1-0 after each game. You want that comfort of the home crowd in any big game, so it was huge for us to come out here tonight and earn it. We want to stay in the moment and not look too far ahead.
